VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!
LAKE JAMES ANNUAL CLEAN-UP
We aresorry to inform you that we WILL NOT have the annual cleanup this year due to the CORONAVIRUS. The Lake James State Park informed us that they should not have any large events with 100 people or more due to public health concerns and safety.
Due to scheduling issues we WILL NOT have the cleanup this year.
We are looking forward to next year and a BIG THANK YOU to all who volunteer.
Every March, the CLJ sponsors a wide-spread clean up of Lake James. This is done in conjunction with Lake James Chapter of the North Carolina Wildlife Federation, Duke Energy Foundation, Lake James State Park, Burke Co. Sheriff & EMS, lake communities & neighbors, local businesses, high school students, D.O.T., Dept. of corrections, and numerous other folks who care about keeping our lake clean & pristine.
Volunteers are needed every year to help remove trash & debris from the lake and surrounding roads. CLJ supplies safety vests, grabbers, trash bags & drinking water.
Most of the volunteers meet at the State Park at Patty's Creek Access (7321 NC 126, Nebo NC 28671) at 8:30am. We will divide you into groups and assign the area of the lake or roadway to clean. Boats are always needed to reach the islands & shorelines. It is hard to believe how much trash is left behind on islands & picnic/swim spots, plus what is floating loose with rising water levels. Trash will be bagged and put in dumpsters at the State Park & other designated areas.
Some neighborhoods volunteer to pick up trash along N Powerhouse Rd, Benfield Landing Rd & Hwy 126. This not only keeps the scenic roadways pleasant, but keeps that trash from entering the lake & waterways. Those volunteers usually meet at Mimosa Boat Landing or neighborhood landmarks.
High School students that participate will receive a letter of community involvement for their college applications and high school requirements.
Everyone is reminded to dress warmly in protective clothing, and closed toed shoes or boots (no sandals).
Lunch will be served at the State Park beginning at 1 pm. Thank you to numerous local restaurants for their donations!
Lake James provides recreation and drinking water for all of us. Help Keep Lake James clean & beautiful!
